It’s Friday!  How about some good news?

As an organization committed to discovering the most effective ways to reduce violence, Get IN Chicago dedicates a great deal of time to measurement. Getting results and analyzing data can be a slow process, but in the meantime, our grant recipients are seeing promising changes on the ground.

“Our North Lawndale participants had exceptionally fruitful final sessions with the B-PROUD curriculum. Participants were especially moved by the discussion about warmth in parenting.

“One participant reported, ‘I’m learning this because I did not come up under it.’  Moreover, the majority of parents that day said they did not grow up being told, ‘I love you.’ They were grateful to receive information from the lessons and plan to incorporate all of it as part of their parenting.

“Other insights that resonated with the parents included not pushing children away when they are trying to be close, accepting hugs from their children, and giving them special time one-on-one, especially if they have siblings.

“Across sites, the majority parents reported more confidence in building relationships with their adolescents. They noted that their teens were becoming more receptive to the new communication styles, opening up about their achievements, feelings, and activities.”

Family Focus, Inc. is currently using a Get IN Chicago grant to support the B-PROUD parenting program, for 200 parents in Englewood, Humboldt Park, and North Lawndale.  B-PROUD aims to shape a set of parenting skills that will contribute to their childrens’ long-term success in school, in relationships and in achieving life goals.
