meeting 6.15Our Youth Advisory Board (YAB) celebrated the start of another year on June 23rd, when they officially kicked off their 2015-2016 term.  Over the past year, members of our YAB have grown as leaders in their communities and with our organization.  They led On the Table youth discussions with The Chicago Community Trust, represented GIC at the JPMorgan Chase Challenge, developed project designs with Allstate and gravitytank at the Youth Shout Out, and never failed to bring spirited ideas to our strategic conversations.  Thanks to support from our friends and donors, the group also had the opportunity to attend cultural events outside of their communities, including performances by at Joffrey Ballet, the Goodman Theater, and Steppenwolf.

In the coming year, the YAB will focus on completing group and individual service projects, engaging with GIC programs across the city, exploring career paths and opportunities, and developing leadership skills.  They have also formed focus committees to work with each Youth Shout Out project through development and implementation.  In July, they will visit the Allstate campus in Northbrook as part of their career exploration initiative.

We wish the best of luck to our corps of graduating seniors!  Among them, Lavell will study communications at Northeastern Illinois, LaFrance will focus on business and entrepreneurship at Malcolm X College, Lakerrie hopes to pursue radiology at DePaul, and Antwan will be playing basketball at Philander Smith in Arkansas.  All of our exiting seniors hope to stay involved with the YAB as members at-large, and we look forward to keeping them involved and celebrating their future successes!

The YAB also welcomed a few new faces at our June meeting. Learn more about them on our website!
